Amintore Fanfani was an Italian politician who served as prime minister of Italy six times (1954, 1958–9, 1960–3, 1982–3) and president of the United Nations General Assembly (1965). A professor of political economy and economic history, he was nominated a life senator in 1972 and became president of the Italian Senate in 1968–73 and 1976–82. He was a member (and former secretary and chairman) of the Christian Democratic Party. He died in Rome on November 21, 1999.
